The Importance of Preventive Care

Our vets in Wisconsin Dells strongly believe that wellness exams are a critical part of helping your pet maintain good long-term physical health.

We recommend routine vaccinations, parasite prevention and proper nutrition, along with regular wellness exams, in order to provide your pet with the best chance at excellent lifelong health.

By bringing your companion in for their routine checkup, our vets have the opportunity to prevent health issues from developing in your pet entirely or catch them early, when they can be easily treated.

Cat & Dog Wellness Exams, Wisconsin Dells

What to Expect During Your Pet's Physical

In order to gain an overall understanding of your pet's physical health your Wisconsin Dells vet will perform routine wellness exams which include:

General Condition

The overall appearance and physical demeanor of your companion can indicate the state of their overall health. How they move around, their level of alertness, as well as their overall weight and size are all important indicators of overall health.

Coat & Skin

Your vet will thoroughly examine your pet's fur and skin, looking for excessive oiliness or dryness, lumps, bumps, dandruff, or abnormal hair loss or shedding.

Face & Head

Your pet's face and head will be examined for abnormalities as well as their eyes, ears, and nose for any discharge. Your vet will also inspect your pet's mouth for symptoms of oral health or dental problems such as plaque buildup or periodontal disease.

Internal Health

Your vet will monitor your pet for any signs of abnormal heart rate, rhythm and pulse which are all incredibly important to your pet's heart health. The lungs may also be examined for any signs of abnormal breathing.

Your pet will be examined for any pain to swelling in the lymph nodes, as well as have their abdomen looked over to ensure the intestines, kidneys, bladder, spleen, liver, and stomach all feel normal with no signs of irritation.

Review of Findings

At the end of this routine exam, your vet will inform you of any signs or symptoms that were discovered as well as make any recommendations for preventive care or treatment as well as nutritional requirements. This is also a great time to ask your vet any questions that you may have about your pet's health.

Checkups for Puppies & Kittens

It is imperative that new puppies and kittens receive adequate care during the first year of their life.

When you bring your new pet for a complete physical checkup, your vet will administer any appropriate immunizations and parasite prevention, as well as run any necessary diagnostic testing. You'll be provided with a new puppy or kitten package which will contain any educational material and samples available to help you care for the newest member of your family.

If you ever have any questions or concerns about caring for your new pet, either while at your appointments or following your visits, please don't hesitate to reach out to our Wisconsin Dells vets.

During your first visit, your vet may also schedule your new pet's future preventive care appointments such as any wellness exams or booster shots

Seniors

Senior pets are able to survive longer than ever before with modern advances in veterinary medicine and care, this ultimately means that there will be new issues to watch for as they age.

Your vet will ensure that special attention is given to your pet's routine healthcare as they advance into old age. Regular examinations will become increasingly important in order to ensure their continuing health and longevity.

While continuing to provide standard routine care, your vet will also give special attention to your senior pet's potential geriatric conditions, such as arthritis or decreased vision.

Your vet may also increase the frequency in which they order diagnostic testing as this can help to quickly provide them with useful insight into conditions that your pet might experience.

Vaccinations & Prevention

While your vet at Wisconsin Dells animal hospital is performing your pet's routine wellness exam, they will let you know if your pet is due for any routine preventive care, including vaccinations.
